NUSAT 1 methods for radar field strength measurement

    Get PDF
The methods for obtaining the gain pattern of an Air Traffic Control Radar using the data collected by NUSAT 1 are presented. The basic equations for this are given; these require an independently determined satellite attitude. In addition we show how simultaneous measurements made by separate channels can be related to obtain a single axis attitude, i.e., the direction of propagation of the incident radiation, and the power density of the radiation. This is done by solving a system of three algebraic equations

Exploiting Data Locality in Dynamic Web Applications

    Get PDF
The Internet has grown from a static document retrieval system to a dynamic medium where users are both consumers and producers of information. Users may experience above-average website latencies due to the physical distances information must travel. Because user satisfaction is related to a website\u27s responsiveness, e-commerce may be hindered and prevent online businesses from reaching their full potential. This dissertation analyzes how temporal and relational dependencies in web applications limit their ability to become distributed. Two contributions are made, the first showing the location of data inside a datacenter influences the web system\u27s performance, and secondly, that relaxing strict consistency inside the web application at a fine- grained level can greatly lower latencies for geographically diverse users. Experiments are used to show when and how much these optimizations can benefit a dynamic web application

Strong (X)HTML Compliance with Haskell\u27s Flexible Type System

    Get PDF
We report on the embedding of a domain specific language, (X)HTML, into Haskell and demonstrate how this superficial non-context-free language can be represented and rendered to guarantee World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) compliance. Compliance of web content is important for the health of the Internet, accessibility, visibility, and reliable search. While tools exist to verify web content is compliant according to the W3C, few systems guarantee that all produced content is compliant. We present CH-(X)HTML, a library for generating compliant (X)HTML content by using Haskell to encode the nontrivial syntax of (X)HTML set forth by the W3C. Any compliant document can be represented with this library, while a compilation error will occur if non-compliant markup is attempted. To demonstrate our library we present examples and performance measurements

Exploring non-typical memcache architectures for decreased latency and distributed network usage.

    Get PDF
Memcache is a distributed in-memory data store designed to reduce database load for web applications by caching frequently used data across multiple machines. While memcache already offers excellent performance, we explore how data-locality can increase performance under certain environments and workloads

(POSTER) Internal Restoration and Modernization of a 1948 WWII era Jukebox

    Get PDF
Using Six Sigma guidelines under the sponsorship of The University of Indianapolis in cooperation with the client, Brugh Industrial Engineering, this project is to modernize the functionality and interface of a Rockola Model 1428 Jukebox while maintaining its vintage appeal. The process of modernization includes meeting today\u27s industrial safety standards, incorporating ethernet protocol, and utilizing a programmable logic controller, PLC. The jukebox is a showcase of current automation technology. Lighting has been upgraded from fluorescent and incandescent bulbs to addressable nano pixel LEDs. The amplifier, coin system, and record selection system were revitalized to OEM operation standards. All switches within those systems however have been upgraded to micro switch technology. Phase 1 determined that the jukebox will require the audio amplifier, coin system, and the entire control system to be rebuilt, as well as modifying the turntable to accept records that play at a speed of 45 rpm and 78 rpm. All internal electrical modifications will result in a decreased current consumption while meeting UL 508A and NFPA 70 standards. The second phase of the DesignSpine was to find the most realistic design alternatives and solutions within the given budget. The client budget for the project is 12,000.Afterpricingoutthemostpracticalandclientapprovedsolutionstheproduct’scurrentstatefalls12,000. After pricing out the most practical and client approved solutions the product’s current state falls 3765.62 under budget. During the third phase of the DesignSpine the team assembled the jukebox and tested the system in order to drive efficiency and useability while also eliminating unforeseen design flaws

Providing Insight into the Relationship Between Constructed Response Questions and Multiple Choice Questions in Introduction to Computer Programming Courses

    Get PDF
This Research-to-Practice Work in Progress (WIP) investigates the format of student assessment questions. In particular, the focus is on the relationship between student performance on open-ended, constructed-response questions (CRQs) versus close-ended, multiple-choice-response questions (MCQs) in first-year introductory programming courses. We introduce a study to evaluate whether these different response formats return distinct or comparable results. In order to assess this, we compare and correlate student scores on each question type. Our focus is on assessments (exams and tests) in first-year classes. The paper investigates two first-year programming courses with a total of seven sections and approximately 180 combined students. The subject of the sequential set of courses is the procedural C programming language. Based on extant studies comparing student performance on MCQs to their performance on open-ended questions, we investigate whether MCQ scores predict CRQ scores. Preliminary results on the comparison between student performance on these two question formats are presented to assess whether MCQs produce similar results as CRQs, or whether MCQs yield unique contributions. Possible avenues for future work are also discussed

The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment: Exploring Fundamental Symmetries of the Universe

    Get PDF
The preponderance of matter over antimatter in the early Universe, the dynamics of the supernova bursts that produced the heavy elements necessary for life and whether protons eventually decay --- these mysteries at the forefront of particle physics and astrophysics are key to understanding the early evolution of our Universe, its current state and its eventual fate. The Long-Baseline Neutrino Experiment (LBNE) represents an extensively developed plan for a world-class experiment dedicated to addressing these questions. LBNE is conceived around three central components: (1) a new, high-intensity neutrino source generated from a megawatt-class proton accelerator at Fermi National Accelerator Laboratory, (2) a near neutrino detector just downstream of the source, and (3) a massive liquid argon time-projection chamber deployed as a far detector deep underground at the Sanford Underground Research Facility. This facility, located at the site of the former Homestake Mine in Lead, South Dakota, is approximately 1,300 km from the neutrino source at Fermilab -- a distance (baseline) that delivers optimal sensitivity to neutrino charge-parity symmetry violation and mass ordering effects. This ambitious yet cost-effective design incorporates scalability and flexibility and can accommodate a variety of upgrades and contributions. With its exceptional combination of experimental configuration, technical capabilities, and potential for transformative discoveries, LBNE promises to be a vital facility for the field of particle physics worldwide, providing physicists from around the globe with opportunities to collaborate in a twenty to thirty year program of exciting science. In this document we provide a comprehensive overview of LBNE's scientific objectives, its place in the landscape of neutrino physics worldwide, the technologies it will incorporate and the capabilities it will possess.Comment: Major update of previous version. This is the reference document for LBNE science program and current status. Chapters 1, 3, and 9 provide a comprehensive overview of LBNE's scientific objectives, its place in the landscape of neutrino physics worldwide, the technologies it will incorporate and the capabilities it will possess. 288 pages, 116 figure

Measurement of inclusive D*+- and associated dijet cross sections in photoproduction at HERA

    Get PDF
Inclusive photoproduction of D*+- mesons has been measured for photon-proton centre-of-mass energies in the range 130 < W < 280 GeV and a photon virtuality Q^2 < 1 GeV^2. The data sample used corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 37 pb^-1. Total and differential cross sections as functions of the D* transverse momentum and pseudorapidity are presented in restricted kinematical regions and the data are compared with next-to-leading order (NLO) perturbative QCD calculations using the "massive charm" and "massless charm" schemes. The measured cross sections are generally above the NLO calculations, in particular in the forward (proton) direction. The large data sample also allows the study of dijet production associated with charm. A significant resolved as well as a direct photon component contribute to the cross section. Leading order QCD Monte Carlo calculations indicate that the resolved contribution arises from a significant charm component in the photon. A massive charm NLO parton level calculation yields lower cross sections compared to the measured results in a kinematic region where the resolved photon contribution is significant.Comment: 32 pages including 6 figure
